Reissued with LP and more precious CD versions
The first solo album of Daegu-born singer-songwriter Lee Mu-ha is renowned as a rare item coveted by music enthusiasts. While the LP is a rare and hard-to-find item, the CD version is classified as one of the most difficult albums to obtain, along with Jeong Hye-seon’s first solo album, among the rare early works of Hanamusic. The CD version, which is rarer than the LP and therefore difficult to obtain in person, boasts a strong presence that is worth the highest price among all pop CDs.
The CD version of Lee Moo Ha’s first album, which was re-released after 33 years, is known to be an expensive album, selling for an average of 800,000 to 900,000 won. There is a story that a CD in average condition was sold for 1.3 million won, and there is even an unbelievable rumor that a clean mint CD was ‘sold for 2.3 million won’. The three-piece set of Lee Moo Ha’s first album, including the LP, CD, and cassette tape versions, are all remembered as rare pop albums representing the 90s. The fact that the CD version was re-released along with the LP this time is likely an active response from the production company, recognizing the desire of collectors who want to own the CD version, which is more valuable than the LP.

Lee Mu-ha, a singer-songwriter from Daegu
Born in Daegu in 1956, singer-songwriter Lee Mu-ha was more of a hobbyist who wrote and sang songs to comfort himself when he was tired, rather than aspiring to become a professional singer. Although he does not have any particularly memorable hit songs, the song included in the late Kim Kwang-seok’s 4th album can be said to be his most representative original composition. After being discharged from the Marine Corps in 1980, Lee Mu-ha spent a period of wandering, unable to adapt to society. It is said that he was forced into the professional world by his father, who was helpless. With no other options, Lee Mu-ha eventually decided to go to college and devoted himself to preparing for the entrance exam three months before the exam. The person who helped him at the time is known to be Professor Lee Cheol-woong of Seoul Institute of the Arts, Jeon In-kwon’s cousin. After receiving piano and harmony lessons for three months, Lee Mu-ha miraculously made a breakthrough by entering the Department of Music at Kyungpook National University.

Ha Deok-gyu, who guided Lee Mu-ha on the path to becoming a singer
Lee Moo-sang, who grew up in Daegu, began his musical career in 1996 with the late folk singer Moon Moo-sang from his hometown and Jeon In-kwon, who came down from Seoul, at the Daegu Korea Music Appreciation Room, after being introduced by a junior musician. Lee Moo-ha’s original compositions, which he wrote himself, were recorded on cassette tapes by Jeon In-kwon, and were introduced to the members of the music creation group ‘Submarine with Sparrows’, which was held at the Catholic Women’s Association in Myeongdong, Seoul in the late 70s, and his name gradually became known. As a result, Lee Joo-won and Kang In-won of Ttarotottoga and Ha Deok-gyu of Poet and Village Chief went down to Daegu to hear the songs in person, which gave Lee Moo-ha the opportunity to interact with various musicians and build friendships. Since then, his musical activities with Jo Dong-jin, Jeong Tae-chun, Park Eun-ok, Jo Dong-ik, and Jang Pil-soon have had a significant impact on Lee Moo-ha’s musical world.
Even then, Lee Mu-ha had not dreamed of becoming a professional singer. Singing was merely a means of comfort that helped him endure his dark and gloomy youth. It is said that he did not have much self-awareness as an artist at the time. Lee Mu-ha, who had fallen into deep nihilism and depression during his college years, decided to leave the secular world and become a monk. He went to Seoul to meet with his musical acquaintances, including Jeon In-kwon, Jeong Tae-chun, and Ha Deok-gyu. Ha Deok-gyu, who later became a pastor, convinced Lee Mu-ha to convert to Protestantism by saying, Churches need songs too. Ha Deok-gyu volunteered to be the producer of Lee Mu-has first solo album, which he had decided to pursue in earnest as a musician, and his senior Jeong Tae-chun also arranged a production company for him.

Manufacturers of different LPs, CDs, and cassette tapes
Lee Moo-ha’s first solo album, “Hometown,” was first released as an LP in 1991, and then as a set of three, including a CD and cassette tape, in 1992. This album is unique in that the LP, CD, and cassette tape labels are all different. It was first released as an LP by Hankook Records in 1991, thanks to the arrangement of Jeong Tae-chun. However, in 1992, Hana Music released the CD and cassette tape at the request of Jo Dong-jin, the spiritual leader of the newly established Hana Music.
The LP record number is ‘HC-200491’, which is the unique number for Korean records, and the CD and cassette tape record numbers are ‘HNL-006’, which is why they are different. ‘HNL-006’ refers to the sixth album released by Hana Music. The album contains eight songs composed by Lee Mu-ha. The album’s arrangements were divided between Jo Dong-ik and Ham Chun-ho, who had a long history of musical exchanges with Lee Mu-ha. In addition to Jo Dong-ik, who played the bass guitar, and Ham Chun-ho, who participated in the guitar and drum programming, Kim Hyo-guk (keyboard) and Son Jin-tae (guitar) also participated in the album session, increasing its perfection.

Gentle songs with comforting functions
The musical color that dominates this album is located on the borderline of popular music and CCM. The phrase “Hallelujah” in the last song < > represents it. In a media interview, Lee Mu-ha confessed, “For me, songs are a passage and a tool to convey a message.” In fact, Lee Mu-ha’s music does not have the intensity to stimulate the five senses. It does not have a special charm that immediately grabs your ears. However, his songs have the function of subtly grabbing the listener’s heart and comforting it. The title song , , <>, < >, and <> sung with Jang Pil-soon convey warm emotions just from the titles alone.
The music of this album received good responses, especially on the radio, at the beginning of its release. However, due to Lee Mu-ha staying in Hongcheon, Gangwon-do for six months for religious training rather than for singing activities, the album was lost without any significant album activities. As a result, the album has now become a rare collection item coveted by music enthusiasts. After the release of his first solo album, Lee Mu-ha left the music industry and spent some time as a hermit. Since his first album, he has mainly been active in the CCM genre. His second album, released in 1996, and his third album, released in 2008, are both CCM albums. Lee Mu-ha, who wants to create songs of comfort for the public, showed off his popularity by releasing his second popular song album, Longing, in 2013. This album, which was re-released after 34 years, was only talked about among a small number of music enthusiasts due to its small number of copies. I hope that this album, which was re-released in both LP and CD versions, will belatedly demonstrate the virtue of popular songs that comfort the wounded hearts of many people, just as the singer hoped. / Choi Gyu-seong, Director of the Korean Popular Song Research Institute.
