Bachelor singer Kim Sang-hee’s groundbreaking transformation
Kim Sang-hee (real name Choi Soon-kang) was an outstanding vocalist who tried to experiment with music across genres rather than rest on her laurels. Not many people know that Kim Sang-hee, a popular singer in the 60s and 70s, was a psychedelic rocker in Shin Jung-hyun’s group. The reason for her drastic transformation was the vacancy created when Pearl Sisters, who had won the singer title just one year after their debut, transferred to a major label. Shin Jung-hyun, who had grown rapidly into a hit songwriter, chose Kim Sang-hee, who had risen to stardom with her dignified stage manners, as a replacement for Pearl Sisters, who had transferred. Kim Sang-hee, who learned psychedelic singing from Shin Jung-hyun, attempted to break her existing image as a highly educated, college student singer and transformed into a tough female rocker. Kim Sang-hee, who had mainly performed pop-style songs with a calm and elegant atmosphere targeting the older generation, later attempted a drastic image transformation by wearing lively and unconventional outfits such as hot pants. Kim Sang-hee’s psychedelic stage performances on live club and theater show stages with Shin Jung-hyun became a hot topic among the younger generation of the time and received an explosive response.

Records of Kim Sang-hee’s performance commemorating the Cultural Award
This album, which was re-released in the original LP format after more than half a century, is the only live album among the Shin Jung-hyun Trilogy works left behind by Kim Sang-hee. Since there were not many cases of live performances being recorded in the 60s and 70s, it is a very valuable resource in that it allows us to indirectly experience the atmosphere of the time. The ‘Kim Sang-hee Recital Show’ album was officially recorded from her solo concert held at Seoul Citizens’ Hall in January 1970 and released two months later. At that time, not only solo performances but also performances by important singers with many guest singers were marked as ‘recitals’.
This album was extraordinary from the beginning, with the jacket cover design that featured a yellow picture symbolizing psychedelic, which was popular among the younger generation at the time, surrounding Kim Sang-hee’s performance photo. The late legendary comedian Bae Sam-ryong served as the MC for Kim Sang-hee’s recital, sponsored by Seoul Shinmun and hosted by MBC Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation. The performances were performed by the band Shin Jung-hyun and Questions, as well as two teams: Yeo Dae-young and Allman Bar. The lineup of performances that showed her identity, who had digested songs with different textures as a popular singer Kim Sang-hee and a rocker Kim Sang-hee from Shin Jung-hyun’s band, is also interesting.
The value of this album shines in the fact that Kim Sang-hee introduces all the songs with her voice. The first side of this album, which contains a total of 10 songs, consists of her representative hit songs that brought her popularity, her favorite classics, and her pop song repertoire. Following Bae Sam-ryong’s voice that opens the album, live versions of Kim Sang-hee’s hit songs , , and are performed briskly. Next, a cover version of Lee Nan-young’s , a classic Korean pop song that has been loved across time, and Kim Sang-hee’s favorite pop song , The back vividly conveys the typical atmosphere of theater shows that were at the peak of their popularity in the 60s and 70s.

Shin Jung-hyun’s gorgeous psychedelic sound included on the back
The highlight of this album is not the first side, which contains the established repertoire of popular singer Kim Sang-hee, but the second side, which contains three songs written by Shin Jung-hyun and sung by Kim Sang-hee, who transformed into a rocker with the performance of Questions. The witty comment of host Bae Sam-ryong introducing the band master Shin Jung-hyun as the first importer of psychedelic tracks from abroad makes the listeners laugh. The first track begins with the Japanese Kojimi sisters singing the Pearl Sisters representative song A Cup of Coffee in awkward Korean pronunciation. There is no information about the Kojimi sisters profile or domestic activities, but it is possible that they met Shin Jung-hyun while working at the 8th US Army club. At the time, there was a rumor that Japan was trying to naturalize Shin Jung-hyun. Following the Trio Hapanis, who remade Shin Jung-hyuns songs, this live track by the Kojimi sisters provides persuasive evidence that the rumor was not a false rumor.
, which follows with a familiar melody, is a hit song by Lana Aerospo (Korean team name: Frog and Toad), who led the mixed duet heyday of the 70s along with Duae Moa. The version sung by Kim Sang-hee embodies the pain of hopeless love with excellent singing skills, conveying a different, sorrowful feeling from the sweet original version of Lana Aerospo. It is a pop song that fits the image of pop singer Kim Sang-hee. The highlight of this album is the 7 minute and 50 second long masterpiece <>, an original composition by Shin Jung-hyun, included on the third track of side 2. Kim Sang-hee sang this song live with even more psychedelic singing than in his previously released regular album. Shin Jung-hyun also shows off his psychedelic ad-lib guitar playing, freely using the wah-wah pedal.

banned for ‘low-speed creative method’
Kim Sang-hee’s hit song “How to Do It”, which garnered attention with his album and various performances, was plagued by criticism because of its title and lyrics. In particular, the mischievous men who changed the lyrics corresponding to the title were a problem. Due to the popularity of songs with sexually changed lyrics, this song was banned from broadcasting for the reason of “vulgar singing style.” Kim Sang-hee released three albums while working as a singer in the Shin Jung-hyun Division from 1969 to 1970. All of them are now considered ultra-rare records that are sold at high prices. This is because of the brand power of Shin Jung-hyun’s work, the fact that they are rare albums that were discarded due to sales and broadcasting bans and are therefore rare to the point that only a small number remain, and the freshness of the radical transformation of Kim Sang-hee, a popular singer at the time.
After this album, Kim Sang-hee participated in psychedelic music experiments by releasing one more album with Shin Jung-hyun, but it did not last long. Afterwards, she became an all-round entertainer who crossed genres and advanced into Japan, where she gained fame as a pop and jazz singer and grew into an international singer. This live album is a valuable result that testifies to the hot musical ambitions of Kim Sang-hee when she transformed into a rocker of Shin Jung-hyuns group. Thanks to the power brand of Shin Jung-hyun, who was rapidly rising at the time, and the bold challenge of popular singer Kim Sang-hee, this album is still a target for record collectors. Kim Sang-hees first live album, subtitled Kim Sang-hee Commemorative Performance, Winner of Seoul Shinmun Culture Award, is also a rare and valuable performance record of the domestic popular music industry in the 1970s, when the culture of recording performances was poor. / Choi Gyu-seong, Director of the Korean Popular Music Research Institute, Popular Music Data Collection Researcher
