Description (Translated):

Kim Hyun-cheol’s twelfth album <12>

It snows in the city too. Snowy forests and natural scenery are beautiful, but snow falling between high-rise buildings also has its own charm. The scenery that Kim Hyeon-cheol saw more often was a cityscape immersed in gray colors. Kim Hyun-cheol has been composing songs while looking at the gray cityscape covered in snow. The sensitivity that has made me sing snow songs since I was a teenager has not gone away even now that I am in my fifties. It’s just that his perspective has changed a little.

<12 (Come Down, Winter)> is a series that follows , which was released ahead of last summer. Kim Hyun-cheol has always written and sang songs about summer and winter, rain and snow, dawn and morning. This was thanks to my innate sensitivity to look deeply into changes in seasons, weather, and time. These materials were also another word for everyday life. Kim Hyeon-cheol had an outstanding talent for making songs about everything. I just knew how to describe through a song the feeling of the wind passing through my hair, and how to express the neighborhood I always walked in in a special way.

It was because of this sensitivity that I was able to create a new song using the rain and snow that I commonly see in my daily life. The street he was looking at was almost gray, and the snow and rain falling on that gray street soon became inspiration for music. The streets and city that he viewed as gray or gray soon changed into urban sensibility and became music symbolizing the city. This is why his music was summoned again to the younger generation in the so-called ‘City Pop Revival’ era.

The boy became an adult. Now that he’s aged from his teens to his fifties, he still looks to snow for inspiration and writes songs. Instead, the snow that was said to come as if calling my beloved in a sweet voice has now become a subject that he wishes would cover up his past. There is a scene that comes to mind when you associate Kim Hyeon-cheol and snow together. It is a feeling like the lyricism and romance shown through When It Snows and Train to Chuncheon, or the excitement of a snowy day reminiscent of Children Having a Snowball Fight. However, Kim Hyun-cheol hopes that the ‘winter’ from <12>’s first song and title song, ‘Winter, Come Down’, will cover up his shameful past. The boy who was just excited and sentimental while watching the falling snow has become an adult who can look back.

The 12th album is such adult winter music. Music that was thought to be full of romance has a stronger feeling of reminiscence. He sang ‘Winter, Come Down’ in a calm ballad format and completed the perfect ‘adult bossa nova’ in another new song, ‘Going Out’. ‘Train to Chuncheon’ and ‘Going Out’ have common themes of bossa nova and snow, but their sensibilities are quite different. Time passed, and Kim Hyun-cheol expressed winter and bossa nova in an adult way, befitting the word age. Considering that AOR music, which he has liked and admired for a long time, means ‘adult-oriented’, the new songs fit exactly with that meaning.

Like , in <12> Kim Hyeon-cheol newly interprets his past music. ‘When It Snows’, which described the winter scenery more romantically than any other song in the first album, was recorded with a new arrangement and a new performer. In addition, the famous song ‘Evening Returning from Hoenggye’ that announced the start of the 3rd album was decorated with a new rendition, deepening the image of ‘Winter Evening’ once again. Listeners have no choice but to become more deeply immersed in that emotion. The performers who have worked with Kim Hyeon-cheol for a long time show a more relaxed chemistry while maintaining the characteristics of his existing performances well. For example, the prominent bass guitar sound that Jo Dong-ik played in the past in ‘When It Snows’ is now reproduced through Lee Tae-yoon’s hands. While maintaining the basics, the more relaxed and laid-back adult emotions that fit the overall tone of the album are also realized through the performance.

Kim Hyun-chul, who was revived with the resurgence of city pop, is now more active than any other musician. Over the course of five years, they released two full-length albums, the project, and and . He worked on a series of music including <12>. Even though he was prolific, he steadfastly maintained his identity, urban pop music. Although he changes the topic every time and presents new ideas, the fact that his music always contains ‘urban’ and ‘pop’ sensibilities remains the same. In addition, contains the image of a more mature adult. It is definitely a gratifying experience to meet good adults in the city and listen to their music. (Kim Hak-seon/popular music critic)
